This paper presents the application of the vortex-in-cell method in the simulation of the heads-on collision of two co-axial vortex rings. The results capture the fascinating phenomenon presented in the dyed flow visualization in the literature that the two colliding rings eventually evolve into small rings emitting out radially. Through this numerical work, the VIC code developed is validated, and the underlying mechanism is described. The generation of small rings is found to be caused by the reconnection processes twice that were initiated by the initial perturbation of the vortex rings. Such a process involves a series of vortex stretching, accelerating the reduction of vorticity scales. The vorticity diffusion then catches on and dominates for later times. |
